Bear Hands (author): If there is a reason to put onions in a dish, I will… if there isn’t a reason to add onions to a dish, I will… I will add onions to any dish… this is rice cooked with onions.
Hubby Bear (eater): The extra flavor is worth the extra effort.
Simple Rice, Big Flavor:
This is less a recipe and more a suggestion on how to season rice. Using butter to highlight the savoury sweet qualities of onions is almost always a magical combination in the kitchen.
In my trials of this I’ve used it with many varieties of rice and it’s worked with all of them but the light, rich nuttiness of jasmine combined with the fluffiness of basmati really takes on the ingredients the best.
Unless it just specifically won’t work with a particular dish this has nearly become our standard “go to” rice when we eat it with a meal. I hope you’ll enjoy this humble celebration of homecookings most important aromatic and my personal favourtite flavouring – if there’s ever, ever and excuse to add onions, I’ll take it.

Easy-follow Recipe:
1. 🍚 Prepare the Rice
- 2 cups jasmine rice
- 1 cup basmati rice
- Water according to your rice cooker instructions for 3 cups of rice
- 2 tablespoons onion powder
- Add the jasmine rice and basmati rice to the rice cooker basin.
- Add the appropriate amount of water according to your rice cooker's instructions for 3 cups of rice.
- Add the onion powder and stir thoroughly until evenly distributed throughout the water and rice.
2. 🧅 Add the Onion & Butter
- 1 medium sweet onion, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons of the butter
- Finely chop the onion and reserve about 1 tablespoon for later.
- Spread the remaining chopped onion evenly over the surface of the rice mixture.
- Place 2 tablespoon of the butter on top.
- Do not stir. Leave the onion and butter resting on the surface while the rice cooks.
- Start the rice cooker and allow it to cook undisturbed until finished.
3. 🧈 Finish the Rice
- Remaining 3 tablespoons butter
- Reserved tablespoon of raw onion
- Salt, to taste
- Once the rice has finished cooking, turn off the rice cooker and let it rest for a few minutes.
- Add the remaining butter, the reserved chopped onion, and salt to taste.
- Stir gently until the butter has melted and everything is evenly distributed.
- Allow the rice to rest once more for a few minutes before serving.
4. 🍽️ Fluff & Serve
- Finished onion rice
- Gently fluff the rice with a fork.
- Serve warm as a side dish or enjoy it on its own.
- The finished rice is deceptively simple, with a rich buttery flavour balanced by the sweetness of the onion.
